A FARMER in his 40s has been killed in a tragic accident.
Carndonagh man Kevin McElhinney sustained fatal injuries while working on his farm in Gleneely, Co. Donegal, last Friday, January 11th.
It is understood he had been working to clear trees at the time of the fatal accident.
A garda spokesperson confirmed the "sudden death of a male in his 40s at Gleneely after it appears a tree may have fallen on him,”
"The body was discovered on 11th January at approximately 5pm."
A father-of-five, McElhinney was a well-regarded figure local farming community.
Speaking to RTE, local councillor Albert Doherty described the news as 'awful shock' to the community.
"The community is just gutted that a young man has been taken from us in such a tragic accident,” he said.
"It's an awful shock that he could be whisked from us in a moment and our sympathies go out to Cathy and their five children who are now left without a loved one.”
A Requiem Mass for Mr. McElhinney is set to take place this Wednesday January 16th at 1pm in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Carndonagh.
