Fantastic scenes from New York as Taoiseach joins city's famous St Patrick's Day parade

TAOISEACH Leo Varadkar’s visit to America took him today to New York for the city’s famous St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

The biggest St Patrick's parade in the world, this year was the city’s 257th event.

Varadkar watched the proceedings from the iconic St Patrick’s Cathedral before joining the procession.

He accompanied an estimated 150,000 marchers along the 1.5-mile route, which also passes by Central Park and Trump Tower.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill De Blasio joined Varadkar during the roughly five-hour procession.

The parade was led off by the 69th Infantry Regiment, which traces its roots to the Irish Brigade founded in the 1800s and which later fought for the Union side in the Civil War.

This year’s Grand Marshal was philanthropist Loretta Brennan Glucksman, chair of the American Ireland Fund.
