Excavation underway in Co. Donegal as part of search for doctor missing for a decade

A SEARCH and excavation is underway in Co. Donegal as part of an investigation into a doctor who went missing a decade ago.

Deirdre O’Flaherty was reported missing after her car was found at Kinnego Beach on January 11, 2009.

Dr O’Flaherty, 46, from Strabane in Co. Tyrone, had been staying with her husband and children at a nearby holiday home at the time.

The land search and excavation is taking place in the Milford area.

“An Garda Síochána are liaising closely with the relevant family and a Garda family liaison officer has been appointed,” said a Garda statement.

“The search will be carried out by members of the Donegal Divisional Search Team and Garda Technical Bureau along with private contractors and is expected to last up to five days.

“This development continues to form part of a Missing Person investigation and there is no change of status regarding same.

“An update will be provided when the search is completed.”

Despite an air and sea search at the time of her disappearance, no trace of Dr O’Flaherty was ever found.

According to BBC News NI, a High Court in Belfast declared Dr O’Flaherty dead in 2012, with the judge satisfied she had entered the sea and drowned.
