Elderly man dead and five others in hospital following Laois motorway crash

AN ELDERLY man has died and five others, including a child, have been seriously injured following a car crash on the M7 in Co. Laois.

The incident occurred around 7pm on Monday evening near Portlaoise, and involved three different vehicles.

The elderly man, believed to be in 80s, was removed to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) in a serious condition and later passed away.

It's understood that he was the sole occupant of the car.

The driver of the second car, a man in his 40s, was rushed to UHL as well in what was described as a serious condition.

A woman, also in her 40s, who was a passenger in the second car, was taken hospital as well, but her injuries are understood not to be life threatening.

A man, woman and child in the third car involved in the crash were also taken to hospital - though this was just as a precaution, as their injuries are not life-threatening.

Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information they may have about the incident, and any drivers who have dash-cam footage of the area at the time have been asked to reach out.

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to come forward. Any road users who were travelling on the M7 this evening between 7pm and 7.30pm and who may have camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make it available to Garda," a spokesperson said last night.
