GARDAÍ have launched an investigation after an elderly man was discovered dead outside a house opposite a GAA stadium in Co. Kerry last night.
The man, understood to be aged in his early 70s, was found lying on the ground outside a property at Bothar Bui in Tralee shortly after 7pm yesterday.
Thousands of spectators had been in the area earlier during the day to attend the Senior Football County Final at Austin Stack Park – located across the road from the house.
A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Tralee are investigating the sudden death of a man in his early 70s whose body was discovered this evening at approx. 7.15pm at a house on Bothar Bui, Tralee.
"The local coroner has been notified and the body remains at scene and the scene is being preserved.
"A post-mortem will take place to establish the cause of death.”
Local Labour councillor Terry O'Brien told the Irish Independent: "This is a terribly sad incident. The hearts of the community go out to the family of this man.
"The body was found an area which is being regenerated at the present time."
It is understood that the man's body was discovered lying next to a supermarket trolley.
A post-mortem is due to take place today and its findings will dictate the course of the investigation into the man’s death, Gardaí said.
