Dublin man found guilty of killing his mother and dismembering her body

A MAN has been found guilty of killing his mother and burying her dismembered body in a Scottish nature reserve.

Dubliner James Dunleavy, 40, was convicted today after an eight-day trial.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that 66-year-old Philomena Dunleavy had been in a row with her disturbed son shortly before she disappeared from his flat on Balgreen Road in Edinburgh.

Her dismembered remains were discovered by a cyclist on Edinburgh’s Corstorphine Hill on June 6 last year, around a month after the killing is believed to have taken place.

Mrs Dunleavy’s head and arms had been cut off before she was buried in a shallow grave.

James Dunleavy was on trial for the murder of his mother, but the High Court jury found him guilty of culpable homicide on grounds of diminished responsibility.

Judge Lord Jones ordered Dunleavy to remain in the State Hospital at Carstairs while psychiatrists continue to assess his condition.

He is due to return to court in April once the assessment is completed so the judge can decide how to proceed.

The jury also convicted Dunleavy on a second charge, which stated that he had attempted to defeat the ends of justice by destroying evidence and trying to cover up the killing by burying his mother.
