FOUR Irish brothers will run the New York Marathon 35 years after their first attempt.
Dublin siblings Sean, Brian, Frank and Michael Quinn, now in their 60’s will take part in the event on November 1 to fundraise for Multiple Sclerosis Ireland.
The Quinn’s, who were the first brotherly quartet in the world to run a marathon together in 1980, are currently training for the race with just 12 weeks to go.
Their story was covered in the New York Times and major news networks in the build-up of their debut race.
Michael said of the atmosphere ahead of the 1980 marathon: “A few days before the race our story was one of the leads across the networks and newspapers so we had to run it then!
“We were four fairly unfit lads but we had youth on our side. We were all in our twenties at the time and played GAA so we weren’t too worried.”
The brothers are raising money for Multiple Sclerosis Ireland, which provides information and support services to sufferers.
Whilst aiming to raise as much money as they can for the charity, Frank added that the brothers may not be as quick this time around.
“Thirty-five years later we may not manage to do it in the same time as before but our hope is to take part in the marathon once again and raise funds to support people with multiple sclerosis in the process,” he said.
