Dementia sufferer who went missing 'tried to get home to Ireland'

THE FAMILY of a Manchester-based dementia sufferer who went missing for a day believed he was trying to get home to Ireland.

Police launched a missing person investigation when John McEnaney went missing from his home in Gorton at 2.40pm yesterday.

The 80-year-old, who was born in Ireland, took his passport and enough money to get him back to Ireland, his family confirmed, but he did not take his medication.

His family raised the alarm when he failed to return home for a number of hours.

Inspector Michael Fenton, who led the missing person investigation, said John’s family were ‘very worried’ about him and believed it was ‘possible’ that he intended to travel back to Ireland.

“John has been reported missing before but has always been found within several hours, so this length of disappearance was out of the character for him,” he added.

“He normally carries his passport with him and his wife believed that he had money with him sufficient to finance his way back to Ireland.”

The Inspector confirmed that the pensioner suffers from dementia but had not taken his medication with him and as such his family had a ‘grave concern’ for his welfare.

Mr McEnaney was found ‘safe and well’ this morning, Wednesday, June 4, Greater Manchester Police confirmed today.
