Debenhams Ireland notches up losses of €8 million

DEBENHAMS stores in Ireland notched up more than €8 million in losses last year, according to the company's pre-tax figures.

Accounts filed by Debenhams Retail (Ireland) Ltd this month show a rise of pre-tax losses by 21 per cent to €8.4 million in the year ending August 2014.

The losses come despite a marginal rise in profits from €162.1m to €163.5m between August 2013 and August 2014.

Last year the British department store chain reduced employee numbers in its Irish operations by 90 – down to 1,681 – which saw employment costs drop from €35m to €33.9m.

The firm's most recent figures also show that Debenhams recorded an operating loss of €6.18m in 2014, which represented a 13 per cent drop on the operating losses of €7.09m generated in the previous year.

Debenhams operates 11 stores across the Republic, having taken over premises formerly operated by the Roches Stores chain in 2006, and a further five stores in the North of Ireland.

The company is expected to post half-year profits from its British stores later this week.
