A CYCLIST in Co.Antrim was shocked to see a pair of daredevils standing atop the Toome Bridge.
Damian Doyle was cycling along the A6 Toome Bypass at around 10:30am on Sunday, July 31 when he spotted two people standing on the curved arches of the bowstring bridge.
Speaking to Belfast Live, the 43 year old cyclist from Ballymaguigan said:
"As I got closer I realised that it was exactly what I thought it was. Two fellas standing each on one side of the curved bridge."
"I cycled on for a bit and then stopped close to the roundabout and took the pictures looking back at them. I couldn't believe it."
I watched and one of them stood up, lifted his camera and took a photo of the other, and then the other lad did the same."
The 1,600 tonne, 98 metre bridge carries the bypass over the River Bann and was finished in 2004.
The project cost £18.7 million in total. The bridge’s unusual shape was designed to avoid sinking foundations into the river bed to protect the river’s famous eel population.
Doyle’s photos of the stunt have been shared over 250 times on his Facebook page.
Damian Doyle said: "It was so windy they had to sit down after they had finished, then I saw them shuffle about trying to get down. It's incredibly dangerous. I've no idea what they were thinking."
