ACCORDING to a recent survey, the most likely county to be rat-infested is Ireland's capital.
While the Christmas mood heads into full swing, there are a few counties that may have other priorities on their mind than getting all the essentials sorted for December 25th.
With the colder and colder weather, rats and rodents are more prone to scoot inside so Rentokil have compiled a list of counties most prone to have a rat infestation.
The results lead to Dublin being home to 32 percent of infestations, Cork houses 12 percent of infestations, Kildare has 8 percent, Kerry has 6 percent, Galway has 6 percent, Limerick also 6 percent, Meath has 5 percent, Wicklow has 4 percent, Cavan has 3 percent tying with Wexford whom also have 3 percent of rat infestations.
Technical manager with Rentokil, Dr. Colm Moore advised people on how to rat-proof their homes: "During winter months, rodents like to base themselves somewhere warm, quiet and close to a source of food. If you can prevent rats you will also reduce the damage and health risks they cause.
"They can be very persistent and if rats gain access into your home or business they can spread disease, cause damage and contaminate food. One pair of rats shed more than one million body hairs each year and a single rat can leave up to 25,000 droppings.
"If you have already spotted signs of rats, such as droppings, prevention may already be too late. We would advise you to act quickly to get rid of them and prevent a large infestation."
