CHRISTMAS is just a few days away now, as people around the country prepare to visit their friends and family.
On Friday, December 18, Ireland will enter a 'relaxation period' where public health restrictions will be temporarily eased.
Following months of lockdown and travel bans, Christmas will be the first time many of us get to see our family.
But with Covid-19 still spreading around the country, what rules do I have to follow when I see my family over the festive period?
Relaxation period
From tomorrow (December 18), Ireland will enter a 'relaxation period', where restrictions are eased in order to allow families to mix and visit each other and celebrate the holiday. This period will run until December 27.
How many people can visit my home?
The Government is allowing up to three households to mix during the period between December 18 and 27.
Can I visit multiple houses over Christmas?
You are advised to stick with the three households in your 'bubble', but if you wish to visit people outside of your bubble, you're allowed to, but you must observe social distancing rules while you're there.
Can I travel across the country to visit relatives?
Yes. Domestic travel restrictions have been temporarily lifted for the relaxation period.
What advice should I follow during family get together?
The current Government advice is:
- avoid hugs, kisses and handshakes
- don't share cutlery or plates
- use single-use alternatives wherever you can
- avoid buffet-style set ups
- allow for extra space at the dinner table
- people from the same household should sit next to each other
- try not to stay in one room with everyone all day, go for walks
- keep the house as ventilated as possible, wrap up warm
Can I change who is in my bubble?
No. Once a bubble is formed, it is fixed and must not be changed or extended further at any point.
What about nursing homes?
Nursing home residents are being advised not to visit family this Christmas, but are still allowed to do so.
