Cornish now recognised as minority group alongside Irish, Welsh and Scottish

CORNISH people are now officially recognised as a minority group under European law alongside their Irish, Welsh and Scottish neighbours in Britain.

A lengthy drive to gain ‘national minority’ status, led by Cornish campaigners, ended on Friday 25 April, when they were formally recognised within the Council of Europe's Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.

The framework prohibits "any discrimination based on belonging to a national minority" and requires government departments and public bodies to take Cornwall's views into account when making decisions.
