GOOGLE has released a new virtual tour of Dublin’s key rebellion sites ahead of the 1916 centenary this Easter, narrated by Hollywood actor Colin Farrell.
The street view tour takes amateur historians around the city, from O’Connell Street to Kilmainham Hospital, and shows some rare and unpublished material.
Viewers will see Dublin as it is today – and through pictures and audio clips from 1916, they will see how the city was shaping up ahead of the 1916 Rising.
The aim of the tour is to allow people to explore and learn about the key sites and events around Dublin city as the centenary of the events that kicked off Irish independence rolls around.
As you are brought through the city, the tour stops at buildings connected to the 1916 Rising, where you are treated to exclusive pictures from a century ago, as well as audio and written content about the history of the Easter Rising.
It was launched at Google’s headquarters in Dublin last night by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
“Having some engagement with Google previously, I asked what they were going to do,” he said at the launch.
“They have answered that call and answered that challenge, and they have put together a sort of time machine.
“What is on offer is unrivalled access to a treasure trove of archival images and resource material that brings the stories of the people and the places of 1916 to life at the click of a button.”
