Cold snap set to return to Ireland

It looks like 2018 is starting as it means to go on - with a wintry episode.

Met Éireann has warned Irish people of lowering temperatures both today and tonight.

While in January cold weather can always be expected, it looks like it's set to freeze over tonight in the Emerald Isle.

Their predictions for Saturday morning and afternoon to have mostly dry weather with good sunny spells developing. There's set to be a few isolated showers over the southeast.

Saturday is set to be windy and blustery, with top temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in fresh northeasterly winds but strong along eastern coasts.

For Saturday evening however, it's set to be dry with good clear spells and winds to ease before the frost sets in.

Lowest temperatures on Saturday night will fall to between -2 and -5 degrees with a widespread severe frost.

Along the east coast, it's said temperatures will not be as cold and stay slightly above freezing in the onshore northeasterly breeze.

Some mist or foggy spells may arise towards Sunday morning also.
