‘We care about people, not hate’ – Trump promotion sees BrewDog scrap link-up with US firm

SCOTTISH brewing company BrewDog has scraped a link-up with US firm Scofflaw after the latter appeared to offer free drinks to Donald Trump supporters.

BrewDog had planned to stock Scofflaw’s beers in its bars and hold collaborative tasting events.

However it pulled the plug on Thursday after a press release about the partnership on behalf of the US firm made the Trump claim.

'contradicts our views and values'

The release said Scofflaw had partnered with BrewDog to launch in Britain, aiming “to get the UK ‘beered up redneck style’, completely free of charge! But there is a hook… you have to be a Trump supporter.”

The release had promised to put ‘tens of thousands of pounds behind BrewDog bars’ to fund free Scofflaw beer over the next week, but BrewDog said ‘the offer directly contradicts our own views and values’.

On their website, BrewDog wrote: “Today we were the victim of Fake News, with Scofflaw falsely promoting an offer for Trump supporters in our bars that we had no idea about.

“We’d like to again categorically confirm we did not know of, endorse or approve this promotion and as a result we’ll be sending all the Scofflaw beer from our bars back to the US.

“We had planned to stock their beers in our bars, and hold collaborative tasting events, but nobody ever mentioned anything about Trump to us.”

They added: “We will continue to care about people, and beer – not hate.”

Error

Scofflaw has since tweeted to say the press release was distributed without its consent or knowledge and it would be working with its PR firm Frank to fix the error.

They added: “While we may have country roots, no one at Scofflaw or anyone associated with our brand, is rooted in hate. Sad that a misrepresentation of who we are and what we do, gets lost quickly in an erroneous report.”

BrewDog meanwhile promised a free beer to anyone who told its bar staff on Thursday that they support love, not hate.

Last year, the company produced a beer in protest at Trump withdrawing the US from the Paris Accord and donated the profits to a climate change action group.

It also opened a temporary bar straddling the US-Mexico border with the slogan, ‘Make Beer not Walls’.
