A THIEF who knocked himself out while attempting to smash a brick through a car window will be reliving his embarrassment today as CCTV footage of his gaffe went viral over the weekend.
The unidentified man was caught throwing a breeze block at a car parked near The Pheasant pub in Drogheda, Co. Louth, which promptly bounced back off the window and hit him in the face.
He was found bloodied, with his face “in ribbons”, on the pavement near the Mercedes E Coupe by its owner, pub landlord Gerry Brady.
Mr Brady was returning to the vehicle with his partner at around 1am after closing the pub for the night. Initially thinking the man had been hurt in a hit-and-run, the publican offered to call an ambulance and the guards, but claims the thwarted thief was reluctant to have the authorities contacted.
Suspicions were raised further when the pair noticed damage to the car and it was then that they called the police.
On their return to the pub Mr Brady realised the thief’s failed attempt to gain access to his car had been captured entirely on CCTV.
“We have the whole thing on CCTV, and it’s quite hilarious,” he said. “He got some smack when the brick rebounded back into his gob,” he added.
Mr Brady uploaded the CCTV footage of the incident, which happened in January, to the YouTube video streaming site on Friday, February 27 – where it has now received 2,109,660 views.

A court case regarding the incident is currently pending, according to Mr Brady.
