Call the midwife! Irish MP delivers his own daughter on the living room floor

IRISH MP Conor McGinn turned midwife last night when he delivered his baby daughter on his living room floor.

Baby Neasa Constance McGinn arrived a lot quicker than expected and the Armagh born MP for St Helens North was given a crash course in midwifery over the phone with a 999 call handler.

The baby was delivered safely before the ambulance arrived, and both baby and her mother Kate are doing fine.

Mr McGinn, who is Chair of the All–Party Parliamentary Group on the Irish in Britain, posted the happy news on his Facebook and Twitter accounts:

"Kate and I are delighted at the birth of our baby daughter Neasa Constance McGinn who arrived yesterday (Friday) evening. Mum and baby are doing very well.

Dad is only slightly traumatised after delivering the baby on the living room floor when she decided to arrive a bit quicker than expected... so quickly in fact that she beat the ambulance to it, meaning I had to have a crash course in midwifery over the phone with a 999 call handler! Those "Labour delivers all year round" leaflets will take on a new meaning in St Helens...

Neasa is healthy and content and we feel very lucky and happy to have her."
