THE body of a woman has been discovered washed up on a beach in Co. Donegal, Gardaí have confirmed.
The skeletal remains were found by two male walkers on Leenan Beach in Clonmany on the Inishowen peninsula at around 9.30pm on Wednesday.
A post-mortem examination was carried out at Letterkenny University Hospital on Thursday by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster.
DNA tests will now take place in a bid to positively identify the deceased.
Gardaí have confirmed they are not treating the death as suspicious.
Superintendent Eugene McGovern of Buncrana Garda Station said it could take a number of weeks for the woman to be named.
"The skeletal remains of a woman was found at Leenan Beach by two males out walking," he said.
"There was a storm the night before and we are satisfied the remains were not there the night before.
"We are also satisfied in the wake of the post-mortem that there is nothing suspicious in nature about the death at the moment.
"We are hopeful that with DNA profiling we may be in a position to know the identity of the person in the coming weeks."
