Body recovered in Howth after car goes off pier in Co. Dublin

THE BODY has been recovered from the water after a car went off a pier in Co. Dublin last night.

A major rescue operation got underway yesterday evening after reports a car in the water at Howth harbour.

Emergency services, including firefighters based in Kilbarrack and North Strand, An Garda Sochána, the Howth Coast Guard and the RNLI, were called to the scene.

Divers entered the water after the car entered the harbour at the fish dock.

Dublin Fire Brigade said they were responding to a water rescue incident.

DFB tweeted: “We’re currently attending a water rescue incident in Howth as part of a multi agency response involving @IrishCoastGuard @RNLI @howthcoastguard & firefighters from Kilbarrack, North Strand with advanced paramedics.”

The Garda Press Office confirmed this morning that a body had been recovered from the water.

The statement read: "Gardaí are investigating the sudden death of a man in his mid-50s that occurred at approx. 5.15pm when a car entered the water at Howth Pier Wednesday the 24th Jan 2018. This is a tragic incident and no further details will be disclosed."
