Body of missing Irishman found

THE BODY of missing Irishman Barry Doherty has been discovered in Scotland.

The 25-year-old, from Carndonagh, Co. Donegal, had been missing for 10 days when officers responded to a report of a body in the water at Paisley's Thornley Dam on Wednesday.

Police Scotland has now confirmed that the body is that of Mr Doherty.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland added: "There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death."

Thornley Dam is less than a mile from Mr Doherty’s home in Langcraigs Terrace, where he was last seen around 11pm on Monday, July 15, three days before his 25th birthday.

The discovery of the construction worker's body came the day after his family had their hopes raised by a reported sighting of a man matching his description at a train station in Paisley.

"I was super excited, and then disappointed when I saw the image - as it clearly wasn't him," his sister Cathie wrote on Facebook.

Ms Doherty, 27, flew to Scotland earlier this week to take part in extensive searches for her brother, who she described as "a real charmer".

"He could go into a pub on his own and leave it knowing five or six new friends. He did not have enemies," she told The Irish Post on Monday. "I don’t think he had the energy for that kind of thing. It is not who he is.”
