Body found in search for swimmer, 40, who disappeared off west of Ireland coast

SEARCH and rescue teams looking for a missing swimmer in Galway Bay have found a body this morning.

The body was sighted by the crew of Coastguard Rescue helicopter 115 shortly after 10am and is now being brought back to the shore.

A multi-agency search operation was launched yesterday evening after a 40-year-old man got into difficulty in the sea at Blackrock, Salthill at around 5pm.

The man is understood to be from the Galway area and was being searched for by RNLI volunteers, two Fire Service units, Galway Gardaí and local fishermen as well as the R115 helicopter crew.

It is also reported that the crew of a local pilot boat called ‘Kerry Head’ came across one swimmer in the water last night but they didn’t appear to be in difficulty.

The search was called off at 9pm but resumed this morning shortly before the discovery of the body.

Identification of the body will take place as soon as it has been recovered from the sea, Gardaí said.
