Body found in search for missing grandson of Primark founder Arthur Ryan

A BODY has been found in the search for Primark founder Arthur Ryan’s grandson who has been missing for ten days.

The Irish Coast Guard confirmed that the discovery was made at 1.25pm on Friday, not far from where Barry Davis Ryan, 21, was last seen.

A local diver found the body covered in weeds in the centre of the Eastern Hole at a depth of around 24m.

Naval divers were alerted immediately afterwards and the body was transferred to shore by the West Cork Underwater Search and Rescue Unit, before being taken to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The student was last seen on June 30 when he leapt into the sea to save his 20-year-old girlfriend Niamh O’Connor who had been dragged in.

His father, also named Barry Ryan, entered the sea to try and save the pair, but his body, along with Ms O’Connor’s, was found shortly afterwards.

The funerals of Barry Snr and Ms O’Connor took place last weekend.

On Thursday, over 100 divers from across the country took part in the search.

Many more dives were scheduled to take place today amidst concern that poor weather conditions would hamper the operation, before the discovery was eventually made.
