Benjy the gay bull from Mayo may not be gay at all

BENJY the bull, who hit headlines last year for being gay, may in fact be bisexual.

Benjy was living on a farm in Co. Mayo when news emerged he was going to be sent to a slaughterhouse for failing to mate.

Despite having several cows to choose from, the pure breed Charolais was simply not interested in his herd-mates.

Benjy's owner grew increasingly anxious about his livelihood when no new calves were conceived and began fattening him up to be sent to the slaughterhouse – prompting a campaign to save Benjy.

The gay bull hit headlines across the world - with the campaign even garnering the attention of the late The Simpsons co-creator Sam Simon, who donated £5,000 to the cause.

Luckily for Benjy, he was sent to a sanctuary in Norfolk, to live out his days in peace.

Despite Benjy’s preferences in Ireland, it seems he is getting on well with English cattle.

Wendy Valentine from the Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norfolk saying: “Judging by what he was trying to do the other day with one of the cows... he isn't gay."

However, there is no hope of  Benjy fathering calves now since he was he was castrated at his new home.

“Since he’s been with us he’s matured. He’s very content. He’s a large, gentle animal, he’s lovely and he’s a very handsome boy, but a big gentle softie,” Ms Valentine told the BBC.
