Appeal for witnesses after Ed Sheeran fan knocked out in 'unprovoked' one-punch attack

GARDAÍ have appealed for witnesses after a man was assaulted while walking home from an Ed Sheeran concert in Galway.

The victim, aged in his 30s, had been returning home from the gig with a group of couples at around 1am on Saturday night/Sunday morning when he was assaulted in Lower Salthill.

According to the Connacht Tribune, the group were confronted by two men and two women who had been drinking in the street.

It is alleged that the victim was then punched in the face by one of the drinkers and fell backwards, hitting his head.

He was then kicked on the floor in what one witness described as a "completely unprovoked" assault.

The man was taken to University Hospital Galway with a small bleed on the brain but was discharged on Tuesday and is understood to be making a good recovery.

The incident occurred on the street at the old Oasis and Warwick Hotel area. The attacker is understood to have left the scene on foot.

Gardaí are reviewing CCTV. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.
