Appeal for answers 25 years after teenager murdered in Dublin

THE family of a teenager killed on her way home from a night out more than 25 years ago have appealed for information about her death.

Raonaid Murray was last seen alive at approximately 11.20pm on September 3, 1999 when she made her way home from Dun Laoghaire town centre in Dublin.

The 17-year-old had been out with friends, after finishing work at a clothes shop, then known as Sally West, in Dun Laoghaire Shopping Centre.

Police are appealing for information relating to the death of Raonaid Murray

She went with a friend to Scott’s Public House in Dun Laoghaire after finishing work at 9pm.

Ms Murray then made arrangements with a friend to go to a nightclub later that night and left Scott’s at about 11.20pm to go home and change before heading to the club.

But she never got home that night. Her body was found at Silchester Crescent, Glenageary at 12.33am, on September 4, less than 500 yards from her home.

Despite 4500 witness statements having been made to Gardaí to date,  no motive has been identified for her murder.

As the 25-year anniversary of her death passes, Gardaí have renewed their appeal to the public for information.

“With the passage of time some person may now be in a position to provide information to investigating Gardaí that they could not provide at the time, or maybe some person who did provide information at the time may be now in a position to provide further information,” they explain.

“If anyone has any information which could assist in identifying a motive for the murder of Raonaid and/or if any person has any doubts about the truth of an alibi already provided, we would appeal for your immediate assistance,” they add.

“The solving of this murder is of the utmost priority for An Garda Síochána.”

Detective Superintendent Brian O’Keeffe said: "An Garda Síochána and Raonaid’s family would urge anyone with any information to please come forward.

“By not coming forward with that information you may be unknowingly shielding a killer.”

All information should be directed to the Incident Room at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station on 01 666 5000 or 01 666 5012, or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
