Amazon to release new podcast series about unsolved Irish murder

AMAZON HAS announced a new 13 part podcast series about the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork in 1996.

West Cork will be released on February 8 via Amazon’s Audible service.

The podcast has been three years in the making and is co-hosted by Sam Bungey who worked on stories for radio show This American Life, alongside Brian Reed who hosted hit podcast series S Town.

Bungey will be joined by former BBC documentary maker Jennifer Forde.

French filmmaker Sophie Toscan du Plantier was found beaten to death outside her holiday home near Schull, Co. Cork on 23 December 1996.

Two decades later, nobody has been charged with her murder.

The chief suspect was a local journalist, Ian Bailey, who was arrested twice in connection with the killing. The initial tip-off for his arrest was when, on 4 February 1997, a schoolboy named Malachi Reid said in a Garda statement that Bailey told him he had bashed her "fucking brains out".

Bailey maintains his innocence to this day and continues to engage in legal action against the State.

West Cork will include in-depth interviews with Bailey himself, Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s friends and family.

If you’re already an Audible member, you can listen to the podcast for free. For non-members you can listen as part of a 30 day trial.
