After 53 years of no change the Angelus on RTÉ has had a revamp

ONE of the longest-standing traditions of Irish television has undergone some major changes.

After 53 years in its current format, the Angelus on RTÉ One has had a makeover to make the daily televised Catholic devotion “for people of all faiths and none”.

The new Angelus will see a daily one minute film being broadcast at 6pm on RTÉ One in place of the old style videos.

Everything from bookbinders to sand sculptors will be documented in the short films produced by a professional film company.

And while these films show some traditional and unique skills, RTÉ will also showcase the talents of Irishmen and women all over the country.

The Angelus has been broadcast by RTÉ television since it first launched in 1962.

And alongside the new professionally produced short films, RTÉ will broadcast The People’s Angelus every Friday which will gives up-and-coming talents the opportunity to show off to the nation.

The People’s Angelus will see amateur filmmakers and artists from the wider community submit to have their work shown.

The new Angelus will welcome minority faith festivals, beliefs and practices.

Since news of the Angelus revamp broke, Irish people have been coming up with some novel ideas of what should be included.
