'A bright light has been extinguished' - Irish schoolgirl Laura Dempsey drowns on family holiday in Greece

The Irish schoolgirl who drowned while on a family holiday on the Greek island of Crete has been named as Laura Dempsey.

The Commodore of Ms Dempey's sailing club in Greystones told The Irish Post that the young teen's death has left the community 'numbed'.

The 15-year-old Co. Wicklow schoolgirl was found dead in the hotel swimming pool in Stalida, Crete on Sunday afternoon, June 25.

It’s believed her parents, Nicky and John, were looking for her at the resort where the family was staying, when they found her floating in the hotel pool.

Paramedics attended the scene and attempted to revive the teenager but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement to The Irish Post, Commodore Daragh Cafferky said: "It is with extraordinary sadness that we learnt of the tragic death of one of our young and valued juniors.

"Laura Dempsey, was a talented and popular member of our junior community and her tragic death whilst on holidays with her parents Nicky and John has shocked the entire membership.

"A bright light has been extinguished and it is beyond words to express the grief we all feel for our friends Nicky and John.

"Laura has friends throughout the community but within the sailing club there is a very strong junior community that spend a great deal of time together sailing and socialising and the shock of her loss has left everybody numbed.

"As a club we will make sure Laura always remains part of our community in our thoughts and prayers."

Ms Dempsey's remains were transported to a local hospital where an autopsy will be performed.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs have said they are aware of the case and are providing consular assistance to her family.
