$50,000 fund opened for family of Irish stab victim David Walsh after fiancée is charged with his murder

FRIENDS of David Walsh, who died in Australia after being stabbed in the neck, have opened a fund to help his family through "the most tragic time their lives will ever have to endure."

Father-of three David ‘Daithí’ Walsh, from Enniscorthy Co. Wexford, died following an altercation at a home in Padstow, 22 kilometres outside Sydney.

Cathrina Cahill, 25, also from Wexford and the fiancée of Mr Walsh, was arrested at the scene alongside a 36-year-old Australian man.

Emergency services were called to a home on Watson Road, Padstow shortly after midnight local time on Saturday morning after reports of a fight involving a number of people.

Police said three women and a man were at the home when a second man known to the women attended the property and an altercation broke out.

Police found 29-year-old David Walsh, critically injured with a stab wound to his neck.

Despite efforts by paramedics, Mr Walsh, who worked in construction, died at the scene.

Ms Cahill was charged with the murder of David Walsh, and will appear in Burwood Court tomorrow, February 22.

Joe Doran, a friend of Mr Walsh, opened a fund on GoFundMe to support his family in Ireland while waiting for the Irishman to be "finally brought home."

"This fundraiser has been set up on behalf of the Walsh family to support them throughout this most tragic time their lives will ever have to endure," Mr Doran wrote on the site.

"The Walsh family will be making the long journey over to Sydney bringing with them their deep, heavy, broken hearts to bring David home to his family and friends to say their final farewell before he is laid at his final resting place.

"Due to the circumstances of David's death, it will be a very long, painful length of time his family will have to encounter while they stay in Australia before David will be finally brought home.

"David was a loving father to three young beautiful girls, a blessed son, a fantastic uncle and a great friend to so many people," Mr Doran said.

"Please donate to 'In Memory of David Ian Walsh' to help support his family throughout this terrible tragedy."

Independent Wexford County Councillor and childhood friend to Mr Walsh, John O’Rourke told The Irish Post the community in Enniscorthy was “numb.”

“I knew David personally, I worked with David when he worked with Ajax Athletic here in Enniscorthy and again when he played for Enniscorthy United.

“The David I knew was boisterous, outgoing, friendly, and sport orientated.

“The community is in deep shock and numb, the community in Moran Park will rally together and support his family as much as they possibly can at this very sad time.”

Mr Walsh’s former football club Enniscorthy United also paid tribute to the “hardworking” sportsman.

“As with some of our players, I played with David and he also played for me.

“A good player who always gave his best and when I managed him, was always respectful, hard working and good to be around.

“Really shocking that someone so young should be taken.”

Only back from Dublin and just heard the terrible news of our former player David (Mocha) Walsh's passing. As with some...
