36 people die after contracting Covid-19 in largest daily rise, 345 new confirmed cases

A FURTHER 36 people have died after contracting Covid-19 in the Republic's largest daily rise since the pandemic began.

The Department of Health have confirmed that 36 people, with a median age of 81, passed away in a 24-hour gap after contracting coronavirus.

Of those who died, 17 women and 19 men,  27 were being treated in the east of the country, six in the north west and three in the south.

24 are reported as having had underlying health conditions.

Their sad passing brings the Republic of Ireland's total number of coronavirus-related deaths to 210.

The Health Protection Surveillance Protection Centre (HSPC) have announced a further 345 newly confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland as of 1pm, Tuesday 7 April, bringing the Republic's total number of confirmed cases to 5,709.

The HSPC also report that of the total number of cases, 1,388 are health care workers.

Dublin remains the worst-hit county with 3,061 confirmed cases (55%) followed by Cork with 421 confirmed cases (8%).

In total, 42,484 Covid-19 tests have been carried out in laboratories in Ireland, with 12,271 of those tests were carried out in the week to midnight, Monday 6 April.

Over this period, there has been 2,374 positive tests in Ireland with a positivity of 19%, an increase of 4% from last week.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; “The increase is a result of a more sensitive case definition, testing people who are more likely to have the disease, including healthcare workers and those hospitalised.”
