A 22-YEAR-OLD man has tragically died after falling from cliffs near Garretstown beach in Co Cork.
The man, who has not yet been named, fell 20 metres into a blowhole.
His body was eventually recovered from the water by divers before being transported to Cork University Hospital.
A post-mortem will be carried out in the coming days.
The unnamed male was part of a large group who were camping overnight on the nearby beach.
Another of the party, identified only as a 23-year-old, also required medical assistance.
They are now being treated in hospital for hypothermia.
A team of volunteers from the Old Head/Seven Heads Coast Guard Unit attended the scene after the alarm was first raised at around 11:30pm on Saturday night.
Local divers, gardaí and ambulance personnel also provided assistance with the operation overseen by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at Valentia in Co Kerry.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí attended the scene of an incident in Kinsale, Co. Cork yesterday evening, Saturday, April 24, 2021.
“Local Fire Services and the Coast Guard also attended the scene. A male, aged in his 20s, was recovered from the water by rescue divers at Garrettstown.
“He was pronounced dead at the scene and the Coroner was notified. His body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem is due to take place.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
