More than 1700 Irish people were arrested in London over a 10-month period this year - here's what for

MORE than 1,700 Irish people were arrested in London between January and October this year.

The Metropolitan Police force has confirmed that 1,762 Irish people were arrested by officers representing the force, which operates across Greater London, between January 1 and October 31, 2017, following a Freedom of Information request by thejournal.ie.

They also gave a breakdown of the offences they were arrested for – which includes one person arrested for murder, one arrested for attempted murder and 23 people who were arrested for making a murder threat.

A further 20 people were arrested for rape over the 10-month period, while two were arrested for attempted rape and 19 were arrested for sexual offences.

However the most common offence found within the Irish figured saw 198 people arrested for common assault.

Actual bodily harm was the second most common offence, with 153 people.

Some 144 people were wanted on warrant by the police during the period, and 126 irish people were arrested for theft from a shop.

Among some of the less common offences where arrests for indecent exposure (four people), begging (three people), blackmail (one person) and ticket touting (one person).

There were a total of 99 separate offences that Irish people were arrested for, according to the figures.
