15 further deaths, 139 new cases of Covid-19 in Ireland

A FURTHER 15 people have passed away after contracting coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland, the Department of Health have confirmed.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre confirmed that, as of 6pm yesterday, Monday 11 May, a further 15 people had sadly died with the virus, bringing Ireland's total number of coronavirus-related deaths to 1,467.

6 earlier reported deaths have been denotified following further examination and validation; the figure of 1,467 reflects this.

An additional 139 new cases have been confirmed in Ireland, bringing the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country to 23,135.

It is the first time the daily rise in cases has been below 200 since March.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said:

"As we approach May 18, the next date highlighted in the government’s roadmap, we continue to monitor key parameters associated with COVID-19. These include the number of new cases, numbers admitted to hospital and currently in ICU and the number of deaths.
"While 43% of the population believe the worst of this pandemic is behind us, the virus is still circulating, the risk is still there in our communities. The health service will continue to prepare and respond to the virus, the public are asked to stay the course and keep up the progress we have made."
