World's rarest gold 'million dollar coin' worth £3.8million goes on sale

A RARE ‘million dollar gold coin’ could soon be lining British or Irish pockets - although its unlikely to fit into your trolley for the weekly supermarket shop.

Worth a staggering £3.8million at today’s market price and more than its weight in gold, the 100kg coin is being privately sold by GoldCore, who have secured exclusive rights for its sale in Britain and Ireland.

Research Director Mark O’Byrne, from the firm’s Dublin office, described the coin as a ‘real collector’s item'.

GoldCore have secured exclusive rights in the UK and Ireland for the sale of one of the largest, the purest and one of the rarest gold coins in the world the first million dollar coin - minted by The Royal Canadian Mint in 2007. There are only five of these majestic bullion coins, weighing 100 kilos or 3,215 troy ounces each in existence today. One of these beautiful, collector item and 99.999% pure gold coins has become available for sale. The coins were minted by the world renowned Royal Canadian Mint, which operates world-class refineries, as well as minting Canadian bullion coin products including the popular Canadian Maple Leaf gold and silver bullion coins. 31/3/2016 Photo RollingNews.ie/Goldcore The coin, minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, weighs 100kgs

“It’s legal tender, the largest and purest in the world,” he said, adding the most likely buyer would be a wealthy family, a charity or corporation looking to use it for promotional purposes.

“If it it’s not sold within a month we may look to put it to auction,” he told The Irish Post.

This is the only one currently for sale – the other four are held in private collections.

First minted by The Royal Canadian Mint in 2007, each coin is 99.999 per cent pure gold.
