A RARE ‘million dollar gold coin’ could soon be lining British or Irish pockets - although its unlikely to fit into your trolley for the weekly supermarket shop.
Worth a staggering £3.8million at today’s market price and more than its weight in gold, the 100kg coin is being privately sold by GoldCore, who have secured exclusive rights for its sale in Britain and Ireland.
Research Director Mark O’Byrne, from the firm’s Dublin office, described the coin as a ‘real collector’s item'.
“It’s legal tender, the largest and purest in the world,” he said, adding the most likely buyer would be a wealthy family, a charity or corporation looking to use it for promotional purposes.
“If it it’s not sold within a month we may look to put it to auction,” he told The Irish Post.
The coin, which carries a portrait of Queen Elizabeth by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt on one side and a maple leaf on the other, is one of just five similar bullion coins in the world.
This is the only one currently for sale – the other four are held in private collections.
First minted by The Royal Canadian Mint in 2007, each coin is 99.999 per cent pure gold.
