The search is on for the best grandparent in Ireland- here's how to nominate yours

WE ALL think our own grandparents are by far the greatest in the world, but now one Irish company wants to officially crown one as the best in Ireland.

Irish opticians chain Specsavers, in partnership with the Beaumont Hospital Foundation, are looking for nominations for their annual Irish Grandparent of the Year Awards, and they want you to tell them what makes your grandparent stand out from all the rest.

Whether they helped raise you, introduced you to the great game of hurling, always show up to your school plays and presentations or are just an all-round legend, the awards committee want to hear from you.

Along with the glory of being crowned the Best Grandparent in Ireland, the new king or queen will win a €750 hearing voucher from Specsavers, a Grandparent of the Year trophy and a family weekend away in Ireland.

Plus, the grandchild who nominated the winner will bag themselves an iPad-- but that's nothing compared to the bragging rights of officially having the best grandparent in the country.

The competition is open to all ages, so it doesn't matter if you're three, thirteen or thirty-- as long as you have a grandparent who's special to you, you can nominate them to get their brilliance recognised.

All you have to do is write a short essay telling people why your special grandparent deserves the prestigious title in less than 500 words, and for kids under 12, 250 words will do.

Entrants and nominees must be living in the Republic of Ireland and children under the age of 18 must have parental permission.

You can nominate your grandparent for the Irish Grandparent of the Year awards here.
