'Sea-serpent' spotted off Co Clare coastline in 1871 according to archive newspaper report

THERE was much excitement in Kilkee, Co Clare in 1871 when locals reported seeing a ‘monster sea serpent’ in the water near where they were walking.

The strange story and accompanying illustration (above) appeared in a publication called The Day's Doings, on october 21, 1871.

The British Library describe the title as "an illustrated and amusing record of passing events".

According to the report, a group of ladies and gentleman and one clergyman were walking the cliffs when “an extraordinary monster” came out of the Atlantic, about 70 yards from where they stood.

The monster is described as having  an enormous horse-like head, a huge mane of seaweed-looking hair and glaring eyes.
