Convicted killer Molly Martens lands prison job on tourism helpline in bid to reduce sentence

CONVICTED MURDERER Molly Martens has started a new job behind bars working as a telephone adviser for a tourist information hotline.

It's been over a year since Martens and her retired FBI agent father Tom were sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison for the second-degree murder of her husband Limerick businessman Jason Corbett.

The father-of-two was beaten to death with a brick and metal baseball bat while he lay sleeping in the bedroom of his Winston-Salem home back in August 2015.

He had apparently been drugged with a sedative given to him by Martens just days earlier.

Corbett had already told his sister Tracey he had been planning to move back to Ireland with his children from a previous marriage.

Martens and her father were unanimously convicted by a jury of murdering the 39-year-old and, while both lodged appeals against their convictions, it would appear Martens is beginning to adjust to prison life.

According to the Irish Independent, the 34-year-old has picked up a job while she serves out her sentence in the North Carolina Correctional Institute of Women.

Martens has landed a place on a special prison programme that will see her dish out advice to tourists visiting North Carolina over the phone.

The scheme, which has been running for nearly 20 years, sees inmates work in a call centre of sorts, offering guidance on upcoming attractions, tourist hotspots, restaurants and accommodation.

Prisoners are also tasked with putting together information packs for tourism marketing campaigns.

Closely supervised throughout, the scheme is notable for giving inmates the opportunity to get their sentences reduced.

As a result of her involvement in the scheme, Martens could now be released as early as August 3, 2037. She was previously due to be released at some point in April 2041.

Molly and Tom have always insisted they never set out to kill Corbett, claiming that Jason was choking his wife to death when her father hit him over the head with the baseball bat.

The appeal against their sentences started last week.
