THE world record for the Largest Human Shamrock in history was broken by hundreds of green-clad revellers in the United States this St Patrick's Day.
Some 1,200 people in the city of Elmira, New York, gathered at a local park on Sunday morning in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record by standing over a giant outline of the three-leaved plant.
Organisers gave each participant a numbered wristband and a green poncho before everyone in the massive throng stood in their respective places.
After standing still for five minutes for the record to count, the crowd comfortably beat the previous record of an 851-person human shamrock set by students in Dublin.
Taking to Facebook later on Sunday, Elmira Downtown Development shared images from the incredible gathering and congratulated everyone involved.
"Thank you Elmira and friends. Today, we attempted the Guinness World Record for Largest Human Shamrock to happen in the City of Elmira with 1200 people, smashing the previous record of 815 people held in Ireland!
"For this attempt being the first of its kind in Elmira, this world record attempt is an amazing accomplishment.
"Again, we thank all who came out and/or volunteered today. Congratulations!!!"
Organisers say they plan to make the event a St Patrick's Day tradition – with a goal of 2,000 participants next year.
Elsewhere, members of the Irish community in London created their own giant (albeit, a tad smaller) human shamrock ahead of the capital's St Patrick's Day celebrations in Trafalgar Square.
More than 200 people and a dog performed a céilí before moving into formation to create a giant shamrock in front of Nelson's Column.
On Sunday, thousands returned to Trafalgar Square for an afternoon of music and dance at the annual St Patrick's Day Festival, which was also attended by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.
