Irish people subscribed to Sky could lose access to dozens of TV channels under no-deal Brexit

IRISH subscribers to Sky television could lose access to a number of channels in the event of Britain leaving the EU without a deal, according to reports.

Sky UK has written a letter to TV providers in the US - including Discovery, Disney, Viacom, and WarnerMedia’s Turner - to urge them to make arrangements for potential licensing issues in the wake of a no-deal Brexit.

If not, they risk removal from the airwaves in future.

The TV companies currently have a licence in the UK which allows them to broadcast all over Europe - but only while Britain is an EU member state.

The Guardian reports that Sky UK's letter was also sent to British broadcasters such as ITV, Channel 4 and UKTV - which are transmitted on Sky under the same licencing arrangement.

The UK licence is likely to become invalid for the rest of Europe in the wake of Brexit unless a new deal is brokered, which some fear is becoming a very real possibility.

In a no-deal scenario, any companies which do not apply for new licences to broadcast to Europe will be unable to be legally aired in Ireland by Sky UK.

In a statement, a Sky spokesman assured its Irish customers that changing licences would be a simple box-ticking process for the companies providing their favourite TV channels.

"We don't anticipate any channels coming off Sky's platforms and are continuing to work with our partner channels to ensure they have the licenses they need to broadcast," they said.
