Irish abroad share what excites them most about coming home for Christmas

THERE’S nothing quite like spending Christmas at home in Ireland – especially if you’ve been away.

So what excites the Irish abroad about getting back over to Ireland for the big day?

A thread started on Irish reddit recently sparked a discussion about what Irish people living overseas are looking forward to the most about coming home for Christmas Day.

“Turf,” wrote one user. “I can’t wait to burn some turf in my auld boy’s cottage. I really miss the smell of it.”

“I’m leaping for a proper spice bag and an iceberger,” said another.

One user living in New York provided a list of things they were most looking forward to reuniting with; including a ‘decent’ pint of Guinness, sitting in front of the stove watching bad TV and going for a walk up the woods.

But not everyone has high hopes for their Irish Christmas this year: “Not really looking forward to it as I have to take the Driving Test on the 28th.”

One Irish expat living in Hong Kong lamented the lack of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, fry ups and Hillbilly’s chicken overseas, while elsewhere someone even admitted to missing the cold.

A very Merry Christmas to those heading home for the big day.
