Archive footage of Ireland gives a glimpse of what life was like in 1934

"HUMBLE and happy" is how the American voiceover of this rare archived footage describes the Irish people in 1934.

From Athlone and Galway ('a thriving little town') to Dublin city, the Glimpses of Erin video provides an incredible insight into life in pre World War II agricultural Ireland.

The video, shot for the American market, shows Irish people working the land and lifting hay bales by hand, Irish country fairs and even the 'fattest man in Ireland' (weighing 560 pounds).

The black and white footage also shows a barely recognisable O'Connell Street in Dublin (deserted in comparison with today) with people travelling by horse and cart.
