106-year-old Irish woman says good sense of humour is secret to her long life

A 100-YEAR-OLD woman has revealed the secret behind her long and happy life: a good sense of humour.

Nancy Stewart from Clonard celebrated her 106-year-old birthday this week.

The Meath woman is thought to be the oldest in Ireland still living in her own home.

Nancy put her longevity down to having a positive outlook on life – though she did also recommend staying away from cigarettes and alcohol.

"Have a good humour,” she told RTE. “Don't fight with anyone and do your job well. That's all."

The pensioner also keeps herself busy by volunteering to help the homeless and regularly donates money to charity when she can.

"I wasn't going out shopping or drinking, so I had that money to give to the poor,” she said.

"So, they'd get a home to live with their children and that they'd be reasonably priced."

She also regularly hosts friends and neighbours for chats and cups of tea – something that may have also contributed to her long life, sharp mind and happy outlook.

There’s just one rule when it comes to tea making.

"Having neighbours and friends in talking and having a good chat with them and a nice cup of tea - if they make it themselves," she told Midlands 103.

"If they don't, they'll just have to do. I'm able to make it because I don't want to give all those that come in the fashion of making it."

Nancy’s advice stands in stark contrast to 100-year-old Kathleen Hennings.

She celebrated her centenary earlier this month and revealed her own secret to a long and fruitful life: a daily glass of Guinness.

So, the advice is simple: have a laugh and drink plenty of Guinness.

That shouldn’t be too tricky for the Irish.
