Ralf Rangnick has been named as the new Austria manager but will stay on as a consultant at Old Trafford

RALF RANGNICK, the current interim Manchester United manager has today been announced as the manager of Austria.

The German who took United over in December was hired to steady the ship and offer his consultant services for two years after the season ended, but has now decided to take up a role as manager of the Austrian national team.

Manchester United have confirmed that his new role will not get in the way of his duties at Old Trafford and that he will perform a dual role between the jobs.

The club's website read: "The 63-year-old will join up with Austria at the end of May for their UEFA Nations League games with Croatia, Denmark and France, after the conclusion of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign".

"Rangnick has signed a two-year contract with Austria, which will automatically be extended by a further two years should they qualify for the 2024 European Championship in his native Germany".

"He will combine the job with his consultancy role at Old Trafford as planned, after Erik ten Hag was announced as United’s new manager last week".

In a statement, Rangnick said: "I will take over as national team manager of Austria at the end of the season but will continue my consultancy with Manchester United.

"I'm really looking forward to playing my part in helping United become a real force again."

He also spoke about how proud he was to become Austria's new manager

“It is an honor for me to take on the role of [Austria] manager,” he added.

“The prospect of contesting the European Championships in Germany with a young team hungry for success fills me with great anticipation.”

United drew 1-1 with Chelsea last night, which all but ended their chance of finishing in the top four this season.

Their next game is against Brighton on Monday at 20.00.
