Conor McGregor slams NPHET, Leo Varadkar and Micheal Martin for U-turn on rules in tweets

UFC FIGHTER Conor McGregor has lambasted the Irish government's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic after new Covid restrictions were introduced in a u-turn yesterday. The Crumlin native went after NPHET(the health body), Leo Varadkar(Tánaiste), and Micheal Martin(Taoiseach) in a string of tweets that he has since deleted.

McGregor has been very vocal since the pandemic began calling for lockdown back in March 2020.

He also aided the fight against the virus by spending €1.3 million on PPE to be delivered to hospitals.

McGregor had given warm praise for the Irish government for the way he handled the situation back in April 2020, but has since changed that stance and now said he is "ashamed" as he felt unhappy with the latest restrictions.

The Dubliner tweeted

"Frustrated with these new restrictions in Ireland. We’ve done our part and we’ve followed the rules. NPHET told us last month we had the virus suppressed. And yet we move forwards only to move backwards again. All we ask for is clarity, and we have gotten none since the beginning.

"Ireland and its people, with its high vaccination rate, after enduring the longest lockdown in the free world, is not to blame for the undersupply of our healthcare system. said McGregor,

For Leo to come out today on foreign soil, and directly blame the non vaccinated, is the most divisive comment I’ve seen yet.

"It is neither the vaccinated, nor non vaccinated, nor any Irish citizen for that matter, that is responsible for this unpreparedness. It is the government!

"There is just no backing from me here anymore. We will rise! Tonight’s address read like an advert to me. When Ireland stands. The world will know.

"We are almost 3 years into this. We have come together time and time again! Gone above and beyond what has been asked of us! Yet all we have gotten back is hypocritical address after hypocritical address! The audacity!

"I am ashamed of my nation's government at this time."

McGregor's anger comes after the Irish government stated these rules

  • household close contacts who are fully vaccinated and showing no symptoms should now restrict their movements until they have 3 negative antigen test results within 5 days
  • everyone should revert to working from home unless it is necessary to attend the workplace in person
  • you will need COVID-19 passes (based on vaccination or recovery) for cinemas and theatres
  • closing times for all on-licensed premises (except for guests staying in hotels) will move to midnight with all customers vacated from the premises by that time
