Crash and Burn: Documentary on Tommy Byrne to premiere at Sheffield Doc/Fest

SHEFFIELD DOC/FEST will host the premiere of a new documentary film about Ireland's flawed motorsport genius Tommy Byrne.

The forgotten Formula 1 talent rubbed shoulders with Ayrton Senna in the early 1980s, but while the Brazilian went on to win three world championships and secured his place in F1 immortality, the Irishman slipped into obscurity.

“His rise was meteoric and his fall spectacular,” reads the synopsis, with the 80-minute documentary featuring first-hand anecdotes from the likes of Eddie Jordan, Martin Brundle and F1 author Michael Hughes.

Such was Byrne's unique talent, he progressed from driving a Mini Cooper in a stockcar race to competing in F1 – the pinnacle of motorsport – in just over four years. However, as the documentary outlines, it all fell apart for the Drogheda native.

Crash and Burn will premiere at Sheffield Doc/Fest, the third largest documentary festival in the world, on June 11 with a Q&A session featuring those involved in the making of the film to follow.
