A NEW horror film starring Irish actor Gabriel Byrne has been winning rave reviews from critics.
Hereditary, which also stars Australian actress Toni Collette, currently holds a coveted 100 per cent 'fresh' rating on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.
That means it has received favourable reviews from all 32 professional critics that have so far watched it, with them awarding it an average rating of nine of of 10.
After its screening at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, it was touted by USA Today as “the most insane horror movie in years”.
It added: “If you’d ever like to sleep again, then you should probably steer clear of A24’s latest horror offering.”
The film stars Byrne and Collette as Steve and Annie Graham, parents to two children.
After Annie’s mother passes away, the family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry.
The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.
Forsaking guts and gore in favour of a more cerebral approach, it has drawn comparisons with the likes of The Shining, Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist.
Awarding it a maximum five stars, the Independent dubbed it “the singularly most terrifying horror film in years”.
Possible not one to watch on your own…
The film will be released in the US on June 18 and in Britain and Ireland on June 15.
