'All I Want For Christmas Is You' reaches #1 in US charts for first time ever

HOW HAS this not happened already?!

Unless you've spent the last 25 years living under a soundproof rock in the month leading up to Christmas, you've heard Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You.

In fact, you probably know it so well that you just read the title in the tune of the song.

Mariah Carey's festive hit has just reached the top spot in US chart Billboard for the first time ever, and to say Carey and her fans are happy about that is an understatement.

It seems impossible that this track didn't reach number 1 in the first year it was released-- or the 23 Christmasses following-- but somehow, the year of our Lord 2019 is the first time this has ever happened.

Yesterday, the singer tweeted "We did it", with a string of happy-crying and Christmassy emojis above a tweet from Billboard confirming the iconic track had finally reached number 1.

The song was originally released as an EP rather than a single, and old chart rules meant the song was not eligible to compete in Billboard's Top 100.

But rule changes implemented in 2000 meant that the track, which re-enters the charts each Christmas without fail, would now be able to compete-- and 25 years later it has finally clinched the top spot.

Good on ya, Mariah Carey.
