The Irishman in America whose homeless choir is changing lives and making the news

AN IRISHMAN in America is making headlines with the success of his homeless choir.

Dónal Noonan comes from Co. Kildare but has been living and working in the United States since 2003.

He set up The Atlanta Homeward Choir in 2013, after being moved by the amount of homeless people he saw on the streets on his daily commute to work.

Since setting up the project, Noonan and his choir have made a positive impact in the community, drawn attention to the problem of homelessness  and have been covered on the local and national news.

The men who sing in the choir are all residents of the Central Night Shelter situated on Capital Hill in Downtown Atlanta. Since becoming involved some have found jobs and are off the streets.

After moving to the Tampa Bay Area of Florida, Noonan worked as a Director of Music Ministries within the Diocese of St. Petersburg and studied Organ and Voice at St. Petersburg College.

He moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2012 where he works as Director of Music Ministries at the Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Noonan said the singing project has given the men "confidence, self-worth" and a sense of "being a part of community again."
