Ten minutes with… Maureen Nolan

Maureen Nolan, 60, started singing with her sisters when she was nine years old. Together, Ireland’s singing siblings became one of the first successful girl bands, topping the charts with I’m In The Mood For Dancing and selling more records in Japan than The Beatles.

Disbanded in 2005, Maureen moved into musical theatre, and has played Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers for several years. She was the fourth of The Nolan Sisters to play the part, earning them an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. She and her husband Ritchie have been together for 20 years. They married in 2010, have one son, Danny, and two grandchildren.

What are you up to right now?

I’m in Sheffield with Blood Brothers getting ready for a matinee performance. We opened our 2015 tour two nights ago.

Who are your heroes?

My sisters, they’ve been with me every step of the way and of course Bernie is my biggest hero.

What’s been the best decade of your life so far and why?

My thirties because I gave birth to my son. That was the best moment of my life.

What song sends a shiver down your spine?

I’d have to say Light Romance from Blood Brothers.

What is your favourite place in Ireland?

Glendalough, Co. Wicklow.

What makes you angry?

Injustice, snobbery and opinionated people.

What book influenced you most?

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith is a wonderful book, I just loved the writing.

What was the worst moment of your life?

Sadly, the passing of my sister Bernie.

Which local star in any field should the world outside Ireland know about?

I watched The Voice UK over the weekend and right now I’d have to say Lucy O’Byrne — she’s the most incredible Soprano.

If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?

That Bernie was still with us.

Can you recommend an interesting website?

I’d love to but I haven’t got a clue when it comes to computers and the internet!

What is the best lesson life has taught you?

To give people a break, life is hard enough as it is so we should always try to help out.

What is your favourite film and why?

I adore It’s A Wonderful Life, it’s so hopeful when you’re despairing. It also stars my all-time favourite actor James Stewart.

What do you believe in?

I believe in love in all its forms.

What trait do others criticise you for?

My disorganisation.

What are the best and worst things about where you live?

Blackpool has the beautiful Stanley Park; I also love the people who live there. I don’t particularly like the stag and hen parties despite the income they bring to Blackpool’s economy.

On what occasion is it OK to lie?

When it’s a white lie to be kind to someone.

What is your ultimate guilty pleasure?

Chocolate, lots of it.

Who is the love of your life?

My husband, of course.

Blood Brothers in on tour until May 2. For tickets see www.kenwright.com
